Google Gets Patent On Using What You’re Watching To Influence Search Results

Google Gets Patent On Using What You’re Watching To Influence Search Results

Google uses a variety of signals to determine how to rank search results, such examining linking patterns on the web, an individual’s geographic location, search history and more. Now, perhaps what you’re watching on TV might become a new factor.

Bill Slawski, an SEO patent guru, posted on his blog that Google was recently granted a patent around the concept of using what’s currently playing on your TV to influence your search results.

The specific patent is named System and method for enhancing user search results by determining a television program currently being displayed in proximity to an electronic device. Filed on June 30, 2011, it was granted to Google yesterday, September 16, 2014.

Here is the abstract for the patent:

A computer implemented method for using search queries related to television programs. A server receives a user’s search query from an electronic device. The server then determines, in accordance with the search query and television program related information for television programs available at a location associated with the electronic device during a specific time window, a television program currently being displayed in proximity to the electronic device, wherein the television program related information includes program descriptions for a plurality of television programs being broadcast for the associated location.

In this patent, it appears that if Google could — under this process — make note of what you’re currently viewing on TV. Then, if you do a search, it would decide if what you’re watching should be used to influence the results you’re shown.

For instance, the patent gives an example of someone who might be watching a TV show about a specific car, then does a generic car search. Knowing the program being shown, and the particular car mentioned in that program, could help Google return more specific results. From the patent:

Someone watching a TV program with a segment about a particular model of Porsche might execute a search query for “Porsche” or “sports cars” instead of the designation of the particular model that was the subject of the segment….

Given that the Porsche model in question is a “911 Turbo,” and that the user executed a search query for “Porsche,” the server can return information about one or more of :

    1) the “911 Turbo” model (e.g., a link to information on the Porsche.com website about the “911 Turbo”),

    2) information about the TV program that is currently airing with that segment, and

    3) suggestions of similar programming that is currently airing or airing in the future and that is available to the user.

In this way, implementations provide enhanced search results to viewers of live TV that are relevant to the content of TV programs that they are watching or are likely to be interested in watching.

Here is a diagram from the patent that shows the process:

google-tv-process-diagram

Just because Google holds a patent, it doesn’t mean that the company will actually use the process for search rankings, as it has said before.

That said, we know that Google already uses this type of process now, to a degree, as part of Google Now.

Google Now is Google’s intelligent personal assistant that gives you information before you ask for it, which includes TV Cards. The cards give you more information about the TV shows you’re watching, plus remind you about upcoming shows and shows you might like based on the programs you watch.

One way those cards can appear is by listening to your TV, to understand what you’re watching, if you enable that feature. So TV Rank is already here, for those who want to try it out.

Backlink means incoming links to a website or webpage. Inbound links are always better than outbound links. Those links are also known as incoming links, inlinks, inward links etc. Getting backlinks from high PR and relevant site is always good. Inlinks from .org, .edu sites would increase your website or webpage ranking on SERP. Do-follow links are better than No-follow links.

What are Meta Tags?
There are several Meta tags used in HTML but the top four tags that are used for SEO are Meta Title, Meta Description, Meta Keywords and Robot tags.
What is Meta Title?
Title is the most important factors for a good SEO of a webpage. These tags should be located within head section. These tags should tell some useful information about that page. A good title tag should contain 60 characters. These titles would appear on the SERP for your website along with the Meta description of that page. Google won't penalize your page if it contains title with more than 60 characters and it skips the remaining characters. If a web page doesn't contain title tag means Google would select the H1 tag as title or it will provide the title by its own.
Always write title tag for the page and not for SEO, if you stuff keywords in you title then Google won't rank your webpage.
What is Meta Description?
A description tag should describe a webpage and it should contain keywords but don't stuff all the keywords. Meaningless description would affect your webpage. A description tag should contain 150 – 160 characters. If you provide meaningless or empty description, Google would take the description from the content available in that page.
What are Meta Keywords?
In early days Meta keywords are the least important tag for Search engine like Google. But it is an easy way to tell our important keywords to search engine. Meta keywords should contain less than 250 characters.
Now Google won't consider Meta keywords as one of the ranking factor.
What is White Hat Seo?

  • Cloaking

The hottest and latest news in the SEO world is Google Rolled out penguin 2.0 webspam algorithm Update on 22-5-2013.This would be a good news for some peoples and bad for more peoples. The entire SEO analyst those who are managing websites would like to escape from Google Penguin and Panda update but it is not at all possible. Even though Google has been adding strength to their algorithm and updating frequently, negative SEO is not decreased.

Google Penguin 2.0 Update:
Google Penguin 2.0 Update focus on the web sites that follows link farming methods and poor inter/cross linking strategy. The websites that are getting irrelevant Backlinks is the main target in this update. Matt Cutt announced that 2.3% of English-US queries were affected in this update, not only English queries but other languages also. Hundreds and thousands of web sites were affected in this update.

How to retrieve your website?
Now all of the SEO peoples wondering to know the ways to retrieve their web site. I can easily say the ways but the process is really hard. These are some steps that you have to follow.

Step 1: Check all your incoming Links. Search in google as link:http://www.yourwebsite.com or Go to Webmaster tool click Traffic and select Links to your site. Here you can find all your inbound links. Analyze all the links and Disavow the links which are not related to your website’s theme. Click here DisavowTool

Step2: Check all your outbound links and remove all low quality links. Go to your website and analyze each and every page for irrelevant and bad links. Check your footer, Side bar also.

Step3: Generate Quality Links from High PR sites. Because Google now concentrates mainly on number of quality Backlinks and not on quantity of Backlinks i.e. 1000 Back Links from irrelevant site is not at all good for your site but getting single backlink from relevant high pr site is good. Try to get backlinks from .gov site and .edu or .org site. Submit your sites in directories like DMOZ and Yahoo Directories which are the top most directories in the world. All try to submit your websites on Boing Boing and Huffington Post etc.

By doing all those things you can retrieve your website in the next Penguin update. Please don’t try to use reconsideration Request. Because google didn’t manually penalize your site but it is an algorithm Updation so wait until next Updation comes.
